Texas Gov. Abbott announces construction beginning on new state mental health hospital in Lubbock
Mental health services in the Lubbock area are set to expand, with the state of Texas this week announcing progress on a new facility.
Gov. Greg Abbotton Tuesday announced that construction on the $121 million Lubbock Psychiatric Center has begun and is being overseen by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. “This new hospital will offer Texans in the South Plains high-quality treatment closer to home,” Abbott said. “I thank the Texas Health and Human Services Commission for their crucial work to expand and improve mental health services for Texans in rural communities and across our great state.” Officials also shared renderings of the proposed facility, giving an early look of the services and location to come.
The new 108,430 square-foot hospital is set to be located off Peach Avenue near U.S. Highway 84 in southeast Lubbock — near the John T.
Montford Unit — and is expected to be completed in 2027. According to the governor’s office, the 50-bed maximum-security hospital is designed with the latest mental healthcare standards in mind to promote recovery and healing.
It will also feature security measures, such as perimeter fencing, video surveillance, alarms, electronic monitors and additional staff, will help ensure the safety of patients, staff, and the community. Deputy Executive Commissioner for HHSC Health and Specialty Care System Scott Schalchlin said the investment in Texas’ state hospitals leads to more resilient individuals and healthier communities. “Patients at the Lubbock Psychiatric Center will receive the care they need in a secure, state-of-the-art building that helps facilitate their recovery,” said Schalchlin.
